comentario para la Niusleter

Claudia Tarazona

Hola amigos pachangueros

Claudia

Thirty-two-year-old Carlos Acosta might feel he has waited a long time to dance Romeo in London, but to everyone watching his debut the moment appeared perfect. While he's long been a match for the role's requirements, the maturity that has enriched and extended his performances over the last couple of years has yielded a Romeo that's a keeper.

It was 25 years ago three guys from Leeds launched Phoenix Dance Theatre on a wave of hip Northern dance energy. Since then the company has ridden out cycles of boom and bust, winning and losing its credibility, tinkering anxiously with its image. But director Darshan Singh Bhuller has steered Phoenix on its most confident course to date. And in his latest and finest programme the company comes of age.

Atlanta Ballet's only New York appearance, at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, seemed like an innocuous way to spend a drizzly Sunday afternoon. But the attractive company, directed by John McFall, possessed a secret weapon apart from its lovely, well-trained dancers: the New York debut of the choreographer Christopher Hampson, long recognized in ballet circles as "the other Christopher."

Surely it must, because it's impossible to watch the feats executed by these skilled, sculpted performers without longing to acquire their muscle tone, not to mention their mastery.

Toronto — Liza Minnelli purses her lips around a cigarette as she ponders the moment. It was 1972, a year when she was savoring the unanimous critical praise and box-office success of "Cabaret," Bob Fosse's musical about pre-World War II Berlin. In the central role of Sally Bowles, Ms. Minnelli had delivered a brilliant performance, as a singer, dancer and actress. The year of 1972, she thought to herself at the time, couldn't get any better.

IN the 1930's and 40's, two companies with the magic words Ballet Russe in their names crisscrossed America, fostering a passion for ballet and, incidentally, forming an inextricable link between ballet and Russia in the public's mind. The whole endearing, inspiring and sometimes tacky tale is recounted in the recent documentary film "Ballets Russes."

Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake"

Ageless audacity, yet Bourne long ago

A decade after its birth, the choreographer's rethinking of 'Swan Lake' is bold, beautiful and evolving.

The 10th anniversary production of Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake" — at the Ahmanson Theatre through March 19 — obviously offers local audiences a chance to reexperience an initially groundbreaking and still audacious reinterpretation of an imperishable 19th century ballet. Male swans, a gay interspecies romance, comic observations about the royal House of Windsor, choreographic references to everyone from Alfred Hitchcock to Astaire and Rogers: What an amazing, triumphant achievement, then and now.

Viñetas Dominicanas: Campaña contra el Merengue (1855)

...
