Paper Bags Get Pretty Chatty Nowadays

Dance may be in for a dire time, judging by the “Fresh Tracks” program on Saturday night at Dance Theater Workshop. Precious vacuity ruled in this latest installment of an august showcase devoted to choreography by emerging artists, suggesting that these Gen Y artists may not have the tools to make their ideas come to life.

Part of the problem was that the showcase began with the evening’s stimulating pieces. It then rapidly lost energy or much sense of imagination.

Rebecca Serrell’s “Native (the earth is plastic),” danced to music by Annea Lockwood and sound designed by James Lo, was essentially a movement study. But Ms. Serrell conjured images of a creature buffeted by forces of nature against which she tried to maintain small aspects of ordinary behavior as she spun and wheeled through space.

She began the piece by coursing backward across the stage, giving the suddenly large-looking space the appearance of an immense black hole, lighted with tactful imagination by Chloë Z. Brown. And it was no surprise to read in Ms. Serrell’s program bio that she had trained with Dan Wagoner, whose way of moving, light and precise yet flowing, could be seen in her dancing.

Next came Jibz Cameron’s “Bags,” one of the most insanely funny, tone-perfect pieces of performance art I have seen in years. Also known as Dynasty Handbag, Ms. Cameron has a wonderful, jaggedly expressive face, which here registered just about every emotion known to womankind in a series of encounters with four talking bags on the floor. It was performed to her own score and music by the Rolling Stones. One brown paper bag was ferociously sex-starved, while a black deli bag, was grouchily unable to make up its mind. A blue plastic shopping bag was a friendly old Cockney gal who became suicidal when faced with being alone again. Finally Ms. Cameron met a chatty, motherly small plastic purse, the most pallid of the personalities, that contained a peanut butter sandwich for the weary wanderer.

Three women from the Doorknob Company straddled mainstream modern-dance tradition in “Five Hundred by Fives,” which set somewhat robotic movement to music by Malina Rauschenfels, with excerpts from dark texts by Dorothy Parker and Jill McCorkle. Nothing quite jelled in the trio, performed by Shannon Gillen and Elisabeth Motley, its choreographers, and Samantha Allen.

Maggie Bennett (“Motherland”) and Otto Ramstad (“Hello Nervous System”) just did not have the presence or performing skills to make their enervated solos work. And Milka Djordjevich’s “Shape of Things to Come,” performed by five members of Team Djordjevich, came fitfully alive but was more interesting for its carefully laid-out patterns.

HARRY LANGDON

Among the familiar titles — “Back to the Future,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” — that James H. Billington, the librarian of Congress, named to the National Film Registry last week, there was one that even hard-core cinephiles might not have recognized: “The Strong Man,” a 1926 comedy directed by the young Frank Capra (his first feature-length film) and starring Harry Langdon.

With his round cheeks and big eyes — he was almost invariably described as baby-faced — Langdon was one of the last major comedians to emerge during the silent era. His period of greatest creativity was only a few years, from 1924, when he was signed by Mack Sennett (who advertised Langdon as his “greatest comic find since Charlie Chaplin”), to 1928, when he moved to First National and ill-advisedly began directing his own films.

Still, those four years were enough to produce two dozen shorts and at least three features, which display a distinctive comic personality and a revolutionary approach to silent clowning. Produced by David Kalat, “Lost and Found: The Harry Langdon Collection” is a generous four-disc set with the avowed aim of establishing Langdon alongside the Holy Trinity of silent comedy: Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. The jury may still be out on that, but the case that Mr. Kalat presents — which includes 20 shorts and Langdon’s first feature, “His First Flame” (1927) — is strong.

At a time when comedy was still largely built around individual gags, Langdon was among the first performers to emphasize not the gag itself, but his reaction to it. The humor in a short film like “His Marriage Wow” (1925) doesn’t lie in the conventional Sennett car chase that serves as its climax, but in the emotion that plays across Langdon’s nimble face: not bug-eyed mock terror, but a blinking, wide-eyed wonder. He’s like a child confronted with a strange new phenomenon, not quite able to determine whether it’s good or bad.

On screen, Langdon is a symphony of hesitations, of half-finished gestures and last-minute reconsiderations: devices he uses to draw us into his head, challenging us to follow his looping mental processes. Sennett, by and large, surrounds his new star with the standard-issue slapstick that had served him well since the Keystone Kops. Langdon’s genius lies in internalizing it.

But there’s another, more problematic side to Langdon’s exaggeratedly innocent comic persona. An overgrown infant, he seems to toddle rather than walk, his slight figure lost in oversize clothes. Put a few more pounds on him, and his man-child demeanor wouldn’t seem out of place in a Judd Apatow film — he’s the original 40-year-old virgin — and there is something similarly Apatovian in his relationship to women. They come in two basic types in Langdon’s work : the girlish sweetheart who suddenly becomes a dominating wife (often played by Marceline Day) or the slithering vamp wreathed in cigarette smoke (Madeline Hurlock in many of the shorts, including the deliriously Oedipal “His New Mamma”).

Nothing inspires fear and loathing in Langdon like the figure of an adult woman, yet his sex drive remains oddly, queasily pronounced. Stan Laurel, who as a young comic was much influenced by Langdon (and later collaborated with him as a writer), was able to instill an endearing sense of presexuality in the character he created in his teamwork with Oliver Hardy. Not so Langdon, whose precocious desires remain on occasionally off-putting display.

Snowflakes fell in New York on Wednesday, but none onstage at Lincoln Center. New York City Ballet had closed its annual season of George Balanchine’s “Nutcracker” with a particularly bright performance on Sunday. On Wednesday it opened its eight-week winter repertory season with an account of Balanchine’s “Jewels.” “The Nutcracker” is narrative; “Jewels” has its place in history as “the first abstract full-evening ballet” (as it was billed when new in 1967). Both ballets serve as ideal introductions to what dance theater has to offer; and both are classics that repay innumerable rewatchings.

The City Ballet season continues through Feb. 24 at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center; (212) 721-6500 or nycballet.com. “Jewels” is repeated on Saturday and Jan. 11 and 12.

The Lure of Addictions and the Mysterious Transmigration of Red

By JENNIFER DUNNING

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is rich with fine performers these days, both established and rising stars. On Sunday night at City Center, new casting in two of the season’s revivals suggested just how richly nuanced performances by these dancers can be.

It would be hard to imagine anyone less appropriate than Alicia J. Graf to play the strung-out pop star in Ailey’s “Flowers.” But Ms. Graf, so elegantly long-bodied and so sweet-seeming on the stage, used those qualities to create a portrait of an innocent caught in the vise of fame. The paparazzi are her friends. So are her milling fans. Success is a gift bestowed on a good girl by the gods. But something in her craves the more dependable embrace of what a passing drug dealer has to sell.

To watch Ms. Graf’s gently despairing approaches to and withdrawals from the needle is to see a complex study in a particular personality and in the lure of addictions. And it’s a study that comes alive in most scenes, ending in a last gasp of enraged surrender. As the dealer, the other lead role, Jamar Roberts is as fascinating a creation, a ruthless man who for a moment seems almost regretful as he stares boldly out at the audience.

One minor quibble: Ms. Graf’s strikingly long, stretched leg extensions give “Flowers” the look of a ballet about discrete thrusting arabesques.

The evening’s other revelation was the two male leads in Maurice Béjart’s “Firebird,” an occasionally intriguing peculiarity in which a man in red brings life to a community in gray, only to expire and be raised up by a second man in red. Matthew Rushing and Antonio Douthit breathed own life into the work. Mr. Rushing was a special pleasure. A fine classicist, he filled his dancing with subtle technical details, but he also suggested a creature brimming with wonder at his nature and place in the world.

Something in Mr. Rushing’s characterization recalled that ambiguous but magical moment in “Coppelia” when Swanilda, pretending to be a doll made human, looks into a mirror and seems genuinely stunned by her living beauty. Mr. Douthit’s phoenix was altogether a less complicated creature, in forceful, exquisitely clear virtuoso dancing. Guillermo Asca hurtled out of the crowd for an effective bit of earthly, propulsive solo dancing, and Gwynenn Taylor Jones projected an unadulterated sensuous need for the mysterious central figure.

Strangely, the Ailey dancers do not yet look entirely comfortable in the demanding jazz dance style of Talley Beatty’s “Road of the Phoebe Snow,” another revival. They move abruptly. But they communicate all the sadly timeless despair of young men and women on the wrong side of the tracks, determined to brutalize those who rise above the dark emptiness of that life.

Kirven J. Boyd stood out for the gutsy theatricality and detail of his dancing in the piece, whose lead cast included Linda Celeste Sims, Clifton Brown, Briana Reed and a cool, cruel Glenn Allen Sims.

[PAUL KASMIN GALLERY]
AMERICAN MASTER An exhibit of seven paintings by Morris Louis spotlights his contributions to the development of color field abstraction. Louis was a part of a group of artists, including Kenneth Noland, that was sometimes known as the Washington Color School. Among the highlights on view at the Paul Kasmin Gallery are the stain paintings, or “Unfurleds,” as they were also named. The paintings feature deep voids at the center of the canvas and elaborate, poured stripes of color at the corners, radically shifting the viewer’s typical perspective, as in 1960’s “Gamma Omicron.” Other pieces include “Saf Dalet” (1959), above.

A Ramble in Olmsted Parks

"Cherokee, Louisville, Kentucky, 1994"In many of the photographs — of Central Park; Prospect Park in Brooklyn; Cherokee Park in Louisville, Ky.; World’s End in Hingham, Mass.; Niagara Falls State Park — the frame is filled to bursting with sinuous, verdant branches and vines, often contrasted with the straight-edged confines of the parks and the buildings that seem to push in on them. John Szarkowski, the longtime photography curator at the Museum of Modern Art who died in July, one of Mr. Friedlander’s champions, described the Olmsted pictures as ones of “a jungle dreaming of civilization.”

“Lee Friedlander: A Ramble in Olmsted Parks” will run Jan. 22 through May 11 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, (212) 535-7710 or metmuseum.org.
